As 2024 draws to a close, I, on behalf of the Board of Directors, extend my heartfelt thanks for your support of the League of Women Voters of Oakland. I’ve heard repeatedly from people all over the Oakland community that they view our League’s work as very important and impactful.
I’m amazed at how much our volunteer organization accomplished in 2024, including:
A fabulous and fun Centennial celebration at the Camron-Stanford House in June, with over 160 community members in attendance.
Two primary candidate forums in March and 11 candidate forums in September and October, where voters heard directly from candidates seeking their votes for local positions.
Production and distribution of over 19,000 copies of the Oakland Easy Voter Guide, in English, Spanish and Chinese; and distribution of over 8000 copies of the state Easy Voter Guide, in five languages.
Production of a much appreciated video explaining Ranked-Choice Voting, plus community presentations on the subject.
Development of our election-specific website, and population of our state-of-the-art VOTE411 website – places for voters to access timely and reliable information on all election issues.
Research and analysis of local ballot measures and 50 in person presentations to community groups on the “pros and cons” of these measures.
Development of Vote With The League recommendations on local ballot measures.
From mid-September through October, weekly publication of our informative Election Special newsletters to our growing list of nearly 1330 subscribers.
48 YOUth Decide events to register 558 local high school and community college students and to encourage a culture of voting.
We couldn’t have accomplished these highlights and much more without the dedication of many members and volunteers, to whom I express our deepest appreciation. 2025 will see a special election in Oakland for the office of the Mayor and the need for even more education and outreach on Ranked-Choice Voting.
Our work requires significant financial resources. The dues our League collects cover only a fraction of our expenses, so we rely heavily on the generosity of our donors. Please consider an end-of-year donation to support all that our League does. Your donation is tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. You may donate online at https://lwvoakland.org/donate, or send a check payable to League of Women Voters of Oakland to P.O. Box 11055, Oakland, CA 94611.
Gratefully,
Ernestine Nettles
