Re:       Appointment of Interim District Attorney

Dear Supervisors:

The League of Women Voters Alameda County Council represents the six Leagues in Alameda County.

As you consider the appointment of an Interim District Attorney, we ask that you hold an open and transparent process. We ask that the names and applications of all applicants for the position be made public, with an opportunity for public comment on the applicants. We recognize that you will need to balance the need to act quickly to fill this vacancy with allowing sufficient time for candidates to apply, as well as allow for public comment on the list of applicants.

As you review and evaluate applicants, we urge that you consider the following:

-  Experience leading large government organizations, including both personnel management and budget administration,

-       Opposition to the death penalty, and a promise not to seek death sentences,

-       A commitment to regular training on, and use of, alternatives to incarceration, including restorative justice practices, and

-       A commitment by the Office to continue to address the history of racism, antisemitism, and homophobia during jury selection and death penalty prosecution.

Thank you for ensuring an open and transparent process for appointing Alameda County’s Interim District Attorney.

Sincerely,

Helen L. Hutchison, Chair

Alameda County Council of League of Women Voters
